WINTER PARK, Fla. (December 9, 2017) – Senior Sam Philpott led four players scoring in double-figures as Rollins posted an 86-58 win over Saint Leo on Saturday afternoon.
Rollins moves to 8-3 on the season and 4-1 in Sunshine State Conference play while Leo drops to 7-7 overall, 3-2 SSC.
Philpott was 11-of-13 from the field and hit three at the stripe for a game-high 25 points. Jeff Merton netted 14 points and Eric Castaneda tallied 11 points and six rebounds. Freshman Parker Davis added 10 points, six rebounds and five assists in his first career start.
DeAndre King scored 20 to lead Saint Leo with Isaiah Hill adding 10.
Rollins was 31-of-58 (53 percent) from the field while Saint Leo shot 20-of-45 (44 percent). The Tars dominated the glass for a third-straight game, posting a 37-21 rebounding edge.
Rollins opened the day on an 11-1 run only to have Saint Leo come back with an 14-0 spurt and put the Tars down 15-11 at the 13:45 mark of the first.
The Tars finally came back to take the lead 25-24 on a Castaneda conventional three-point play midway through the half. A Merton triple and Philpott bucket on consecutive possessions got Rollins' offense rolling. The Tars would go on to take a 44-28 lead at the break after a Castaneda deep three-pointer as time ran out.
Rollins outscored Leo 12-4 to start the second and extended its advantage to 56-32 with 14:02 to play.
The Tars eventually built the lead to a game-high 31 (78-47) on Philpott's last score of the game with 4:26 left. Rollins cruised down the stretch to keep pace in the Sunshine State Conference standings.
Rollins is off for finals week and will next host the Tars Las Vegas Classic December 18-19 at the Doolittle Center. The Tars will meet Midwestern State to start the event at Noon Eastern on the 18th, followed by a date with West Texas A&M at Noon Eastern on December 19.
