Rollins Falls in Double-Overtime Heartbreaker to No. 20 Wingate, 11-10

Tars Stand Ground Against Nationally-Ranked Bulldogs


WINGATE, N.C. (February 23, 2019) – The Rollins men's lacrosse team took No. 20 Wingate to double-overtime, but was unable to keep the Bulldogs at bay, falling by a final score of 11-10 on Saturday afternoon at Graham Gill Field.  The loss drops the Tars to a record of 1-1 on their young season, while Wingate advances to 2-1 overall.

Wingate's Gary Pierpont found the back of the net with 1:52 remaining in the second overtime period to seal the deal for the Bulldogs, who checked in at No. 20 on the latest USILA/Warrior and New Balance Division II Poll this week.

Leading the way for the Tars was junior attackman Ryan Dunn with a hat trick and two assists for five points on the afternoon.  Joey Cinque notched two goals and one assist, while Grant Long earned a goal and an assist for two points.  Tommy Keane, Greg Taicher, Blake Buell, and Kyle Sudol all notched one goal to round out the goal count.  Sudol led the team in ground balls with eight as he won 12-of-19 faceoff attempts, while Cam Reeves won 4-of-7 attempts and picked up three ground balls.  Evan Schimek led the team in caused turnovers with two ground balls to his stat line.  In goal, Landon Salie played the full 68:08 minutes, earning 10 saves while allowing 11 goals.

The Bulldogs saw a team high three goals from Alex Llerandi and Bobby Padden, followed by two from Pierpont, and one each from Joe Cooper and Conor Gronbach.  Ryan Omerod handed out a game high three assists, followed by two each from Piazza and Padden, and one from Gronbach.  Reese Orman earned a team high seven ground balls as he won 6-of-12 faceoff attempts and caused three turnovers.  Leading Wingate in caused turnovers was Sean Moran with four.  In goal, Alex Cordero earned 13 saves and allowed 10 goals in 68:08 minutes of action.

How it Happened:
Dunn got the scoring started, finding the back of the net 45 seconds into the game to put the Tars on the board, but Wingate answered back wit two straight within a minute of each other to hold onto a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.  The Bulldogs extended their lead to 3-1 to kick off the second stanza thanks to a goal by Llerandi, but back-to-back goals by Keane and B. Buell evened the score at 3-3 with 9:53 to play before the break.  Wingate answered back with a goal by Piazza at the 8:29 mark, but Taicher grabbed a feed by Long and placed a shot past Cordero to knot the score at 4-4 with 8:12 on the clock.  The Bulldogs bit next with a goal by Llernadi at the 7:34 mark, but Rollins closed out the quarter with consecutive goals by Sudol and Cinque to hold onto a 6-5 lead at the break.  Wingate came out of halftime and scored two straight in the first minute to take a 7-6 lead, but Long and Cinque each netted unassisted goals within 19 seconds of each other to give Rollins the 8-7 advantage.  Llerandi scored once more to close out the third quarter with the game tied at 8-8.  Dunn kicked off the fourth quarter with back-to-back goals to give Rollins a 10-8 advantage with 8:03 to play in regulation, but goals by Padden and Pierpont throughout the remainder of the period evened the score at 10-10, sending the contest into overtime.  The first round of extended time saw not scoring action, with each goalie earning one save apiece.  Salie earned a save in the second overtime period before Pierpont scored the game-winner with 1:52 remaining.

Notes:

  • Rollins received votes on the NIKE/US Lacrosse Division II Top 20.
  • Wingate also received votes on the NIKE/US Lacrosse Division II Top 20, and checked in at No. 20 on the USILA/Warrior and New Balance DII Poll this week.
  • The Tars were dominant on faceoffs, winning 16-of-26, but trailed the game in shots, 44-30, and ground balls, 40-35.
  • Rollins trails the all-time series against Wingate, 3-6.  When playing the Bulldogs on their home turf, the Tars are 1-3 overall.
