Tars Stay Unbeaten in SSC Play

SAINT LEO, Fla. (December 29, 2018) – Rollins had three players score in double figures and showed no rust from a 12-day layoff, beating Saint Leo 67-54 Saturday afternoon. 

The Tars move to 7-3 overall after a fifth-straight win and remain perfect in the Sunshine State Conference at 4-0. 

Carly McLendon led the way with 14 points, shooting 6-of-7 from the field. Yari Martinez-Toro added 11 points and four assists while Rachel Lia netted 10 and Vernisha Andrews hauled in 12 rebounds. 

Asia Royster scored 14 to pace Saint Leo (6-6, 1-3 SSC). Gina Brierley scored 11 to go along with six rebounds. 

The two teams traded baskets to start with the score tied 11-11 halfway through the first. Rollins then outscored the Lions 7-2 the rest of the frame and took an 18-13 lead after one. The Tars defense limited Leo to just six field goals in the second and the visitors built a 37-28 lead at intermission. 

Rollins led 44-28 early in the third before Saint Leo came charging back and closed to 53-44 heading into the fourth. Tianna Rosser provided the Tars spark in the quarter, scoring four points.

The Tars then went back up 14 by the halfway point of the fourth and cruised to the finish.

Rollins shot 44 percent from the field and held Leo to 39 percent. The Tars dominated the glass 40-28 and committed just 10 turnovers.

The Tars return home on Wednesday, January 2 to host Nova Southeastern at 5:30 p.m. The Sharks 6-5 on the year and 2-2 in SSC play. Fans can catch the action live on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com and locally on 91.5 FM WPRK.
