No. 7 Rollins Wins Seventh Straight; Defeats Wingate, 16-6

Tars Leash Bulldogs in South Region Matchup


SPARKS, Md.  (March 13, 2019) – The Rollins women's lacrosse team rolled to their seventh-straight victory on Wednesday morning at Tierney Field, defeating Wingate University by a final score of 16-6.  The win leaves the Tars perfect on the season with a record of 7-0, while the Bulldogs fall to a mark of 2-5.

Hannah Ashton led the way with five goals and an assist for six points on the day, followed by Paige Brock with five goals of her own.  Kallie German netted two goals and two assists, while Sammy Ottimo had her best game to date as a Tar with a three point performance as she scored two goals and added an assist.  Both Eden Cooke and Kaitlin Young added one goal apiece to close out the Tars' scoring efforts.  Sophie Stavisky and Lily Rizk led the team with four ground balls each, while Lindsay Van Beck earned three ground balls, and led the team in draw controls and caused turnovers with six and four, respectively.  In goal, Gabby Tanner played a full game, facing 13 shots from the Bulldogs.  Tanner earned seven saves while allowing six goals and added a ground ball.

Wingate saw a team best two goals from Kendall Wells, while Paige Kamer led the team in overall points with three as she scored a goal and added a team best two assists.  Morgan Akers scored a goal and added an assist, while Bella Pellet and Casey Roux notched one goal apiece.  Becca Ruiz dished out one assist to help the Bulldogs put up a total of six goals and four assists on the day.  Caroline Heffner and Arion Pierre earned a team best three ground balls each, while Sierra Street led the team in draw controls with four.  Both Street and Ruiz notched a team best two caused turnovers.  Pierre saw a full 60 minutes of action between the pipes, facing 26 shots from the Tars, allowing 16 goals while making 10 saves.

How it Happened:
Rollins jogged out to a 5-0 lead with 11:23 to go in the first half before the Bulldogs were able to find the back of the net with 9:37 on the clock.  The Tars added a late goal as Paige Brock placed a shot in cage off of an assist by German with 19 seconds to go before the break, giving the Tars a 6-1 lead at halftime.  The Tars closed out the game out-scoring the Bulldogs 10-5 throughout the final 30 minutes, securing their seventh-straight win on the season.

  • Sammy Ottimo posted a Rollins personal best with two goals and an assist for three points
  • Rollins now leads the all-time series, 3-0.
  • Last time out against Wingate, Rollins defeated the Bulldogs by a final score of 19-8 on February 25, 2018.
  • Rollins is now 2-0 on the season when playing at a neutral site location.
  • With their 7-0 start to the season, the Tars have earned the program's third-best start in Rollins women's lacrosse history.
  • The Tars' best undefeated run was in 2012, where they went 15-0 before falling to Regis in regular season action, 14-13.  That year, Rollins advanced to the NCAA Tournament Semifinals, where they fell to West Chester by a score of 19-10.
  • The Tars' second best undefeated run was a 9-0 record in 2016.  The Tars eventually matched up against West Chester in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals, defeating the Rams 9-8 to advance to the Semifinals where they fell to Florida Southern by a score of 8-5.
  • Rollins checked in at No. 7 on the IWLCA DII Poll, and No. 6 on the NIKE/US Lacrosse DII Top-20 this week.  Wingate was not ranked and did not receive any votes.

NEXT:
The Tars return to action for their final Spring Break game on Friday, March 15, when they take on Holy Family at 7:30 p.m.  The game will be played at Bryn Athyn College, at General Ronald K.
