Tars Tripped Up by Cougars In Extra Innings

WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 24, 2018) – For the second straight day, the Tars and Cougars battled it out in extra innings, with the Cougars once again edging the Tars, this time 8-4.

The Tars fall to 6-5 on the year, while the Cougars improve their record with a 9-2 mark.

Nick Breen, Brendan Brundage, and Grant Ashline all recorded two hits to anchor Rollins offensively. Senior Brain Brooker compiled two RBI, and a home run, while Nick Santucci chipped in one hit, one RBI, and one run scored.

Brad Case started the game on the mound for the Tars. The junior supplied seven innings, allowing only six hits, four runs (three unearned), and one walk. He also managed to toss six strikeouts against 28 batters faced. Whit Drennan pitched 1.2 innings, while registering two strikeouts on the hill.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Rollins took a slight early lead over Columbus State, 1-0 when Breen singled to center field, plating Brundage for the opening score.
  • The Cougars would respond with three runs of their own in the top of the second. Turner Vincent brought home three runners when he doubled to right field, giving the Cougars a 3-1 advantage.
  • Rollins would register two home runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead, 4-3. Santucci smacked a solo shot over the right field fence, then it was Brooker who sent another home run over the left field fence, plating Ashline and himself.
  • The Cougars answered right back with a Vincent solo shot of their own, knotting the score, 4-4.
  • In extra innings, the Cougars offense exploded for four runs, and took the lead 8-4. The Tars were not able to answer in the bottom of the tenth, and Columbus State took its second straight against the Tars, 8-4.

• Brooker hit his 10th home run in the blue and gold

• Rollins is now 2-2 all-time vs. Columbus State
• Head Coach Jon Sjogren is 327-304-3 in his 13th season at the helm of Rollins baseball
