The Tars will open their 2020 campaign against the Badgers of Spring Hill College. Rollins finished 25-24 last season, which was 9th in the Sunshine State Conference. In this year's conference preseason poll, coaches chose Rollins to finish in the tenth position. Spring Hill sported a 29-22 record in 2019 and won the SIAC conference, earning a berth in the NCAA South Regional. They are the favorite to take the SIAC crown once agian in 2020.
Rollins: Last year's strength came on the mound, as the Tars had the 2nd-best ERA in the SSC. However, Rollins had four pitchers selected in the MLB draft, leaving some big shoes to fill. The Tars will need Drew Daczkowski to return to form after making only two starts last season. The big righty tallied 17 punchouts in ten innings of work, with three walks allowed. Another arm to keep an eye on is junior RHP Tate Stone-Frisina who had a strong summer ball campaign for the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs of the Florida League. The staff also received a boost when mid-season transfer Austin Long was granted eligibility after leaving Indiana University. At the plate, Rollins returns the bulk of their lineup from last season, including 1B Jack Gonzalez who was granted an extra year of eligibility. Gonzalez was the team leader in multiple categories last year including hits, runs and extra-base hits. The Tars also have their top hitter (Luke Reidy), top RBI man (Cameron Meehan), and top slugger (Cameron Montgomery) ready to go. Look for Adams Torres, a transfer from UCF, to see a lot of action at short and near the top of the lineup.
Spring Hill: The Badgers placed two members on the 2020 NCBWA All-South Region team in the form of infielders Daniel Rodriguez and Mason Bonnafons. Rodriguez, selected to the 1st team, received a slew of awards last season after finishing his season with a .365/.448/.618 slash line to go with 11 home runs, 61 RBI, and 11 stolen bases. Bonnafons, a 2nd team selection, tallied 50 runs, 41 RBI and a .472 OBP for the Badgers in 2019. Lefty Taylor Gibson was the team's strikeout leader last year, recording 56 in 47.1 innings. Aside from Gibson, the Badgers do not have another pitcher with more than 40 innings pitched last year.
This is the first matchup between the Tars and Badgers.
