VALDOSTA, Ga. (February 29, 2020) - Valdosta State claimed the series win over Rollins on Saturday afternoon by scoring twice in their final at bat to secure a 4-3 win over the Tars.
Rollins jumped out to an early lead in the first inning thanks to som ehelp from Valdosta State. Camern Meehan singled to lead things off, and then Luke Reidy join him on base after being hit by a pitch with two outs. The inning looked to be over in the next at bat when Ryan Coleman grounded a ball to first, but an errant throw allowed Meehan to score and the other two runners to advance. Andres Antonini then stepped up, and hit a ball to short. This time it was thr shortstop who made a poor throw that allowed both Reidy and Coleman to touch the plate to make it 3-0.
Nick Lewis got one run back for the Blazers with an RBI double in the bottom of the first that scored Dalton Board. They added a second run in the third when Board scored on an RBI groundout from David Mayberry.
Things were quiet after that as Drew Daczkowski and Cooper Cain engaged in a pitcher's duel. Daczkowski did well to escape damage outside of two runs, including forcing a double play in the bottom of the 5th with the bases loaded and one out to maintain a 3-2 lead. Cain meanwhile was dominant outside of the first inning. He retired the Tars in order in four different innings, and ended up with 11 strikeouts over eight innings of work.
After Daczkkowski turned in a quality start with two earned over six innings, he was replaced by James Hoelle. The righty struck out the side in the seventh, and followed that with a scoreless, hitless eighth innings.
Rollins put two men on in the ninth inning, but failed to prduce an insurance run. In the bottom of the frame, the Tars brought in Tate Stone-Frisina to close things out. The junior had been used as a starter in each of his first four appearances on the year, and this was his first relief appearance. Things started off well with a strikeout, but then the next two batters were hit by pitches. With two men on, Nick Lewis doubled to right field, his third extra-base hit of the day. The blast scored Board to tie things up at three. After intentioanlly walking Alec Alywine to load the bases, Jordan Holt hit a ball deep enough to center field to score Jowenrick Daantji to end the game 4-3.
The loss drops Rollins to 9-6 on the year, while Valdosta State moves to 10-3. The two teams will face off for the third and final game of the season on Sunday afternoon with a 1:00 pm first pitch. Stay tuned to RollinsSports.com for the latest updates.
