VALDOSTA, Ga. (March 1, 2020) - For the third time in three days the Valdosta State Blazers defeated the Rollins Tars, this time by a score of 7-3 on Sunday afternoon.
The Blazers started the scoring early with a run in the first. With two outs, Alec Alywine doubled and was immediately brought in on an RBI single from David Mayberry. Rollins was quick to react with a run of their own by mimicking the same sequence. With two outs, Sam LaFontaine continued his hot weekend with a double to right field, his second extra-base hit of the series. Catcher Joe Cosgrove followed that with a single to center to knot things up at one.
Valdosta extended their lead in the fourth inning. Mayberry picked up his second and third RBI of the day with a two-run bomb that scored Alywine. Later in the inning, Logan Stephens came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 4-1. With two men on, Ross Korosec was called on and escaped any further damage by getting the next two Blazers out.
Rollins had a huge opportunity in the fifth inning. A single from Cameron Meehan, a double from Andres Antonini and a walk to Luke Reidy loaded the bases with no one out. Jake Rolly drove in a run on a catcher's interference to make the score 4-2. The rally was stopped dead after that when Valdosta forced Gabe Scavone into a 5-2-3 double play, followed by a groundout form Parker Smith to quell the threat. In the bottom of the frame, Nick Lewis led off with a home run to make the score 5-2.
The final scoring of the game came in the seventh. Meehan and Antonini hit back-to-back doubles to bring the score to 5-3. Once again, the Tars failed to bring in the RISP as three of the next four hitters were put out. Two hits and two Rollins errors in the bottom of the seventh led to another pair of runs, and the final score of 7-3.
Steven Swift took the loss for the Tars with a final line of 3.1 innings, 4 hits, 4 runs and 2 strikeouts. Tristan Cone was the winner for the Blazers, moving to 4-0 on the year. The Tars actually outhit Valdosta State in this one, 10-7, with Meehan and Reidy each collecting three a piece. Antonini had two doubles and an RBI in the loss.
The loss drops Rollins to 9-7 on the season. They will be back in action with the start of the 72nd Annual Baseball Week at Rollins on Thursday. The Tars will face Malone University at 12 pm. A full schedule of Baseball Week action will be released on Wednesday. Stay tuned to RollinsSports.com for the latest updates.
