WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 7, 2020) - The Rollins Men's Rowing Team kicked off their 2020 season at home for the Metro Cup Regatta.
The Tars posted a stellar day ,sweeping all the events (MV8, MN8, MV4, MLt 4, MN4) in not so stellar conditions. The wind was ripping down the race course at 15 -20 mph creating some serious washing machine water through the middle 1000m of the race course.
The men's Varsity 8 (Landon Higginbotham, Cameron Boyd, Cameron Harris, Timothy Edwards, Connor Stolp, Michael Pakuris, Jose Fernandez, Jack Wheeler, Jay Kineon) was the first race of the day jumping out to an early lead over Central Florida and keeping it for the duration. Central Florida made a charge at the end and Rollins responded crossing the line two seconds ahead of the Knights.
All of the remaining races followed a similar storyline with the Rollins men earning gold in each race. Jay Kineon rowed in three events and coxed in one earning four medals himself on Saturday. Every rower raced at least two races and some were fortunate to race three times.
"I love to race our athletes as much as possible through the season" said Rollins Head Coach Shawn Pistor. "The more racing we do, the more experience they get and the more training they get early."
Coach Pistor also commented that his rowers put in so much time and effort that just racing once on a given weekend is not fair to them.
The Men's rowing team will be back on Lake Maitland March 14 for the Rollins invitational against the University of Florida. The team will have pontoon boats available for Rollins parents and supporters to watch and cheer the races from start to finish. The regatta starts at 8 am.
