UPSET! Tars Take Down No. 1 Wingate

Rollins (1-0-1) – 2
Wingate (1-1-0) – 1

WINGATE, N.C. (September 2, 2017) – Playing their second game in as many days, the Tars faced a daunting task, going up against top-ranked, and defending National Champions, Wingate.  Rollins would take the early advantage, but ultimately needed a brilliant strike by Damian Clarke in the final moments to seal the victory.  The Tars improve to 1-0-1 in 2017, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-1-0 in the young campaign.

First Half: The Tars came out with intensity, taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute.  Damian Clarke put the Tars on the scoreboard with a headed goal, coming on a George New cross.  The Tars continued to pressure, with Clarke coming close to doubling the Rollins lead, hitting the post.  The Bulldogs would eventually grow into the game, applying pressure in the closing minutes of the half.  Tars' keeper Drew Trautmann was up to the challenge however, finishing the frame with four stops.

Second Half: Wingate continued their onslaught early in the second half. The Bulldogs would eventually find the back of the net, equalizing when Elliot Cutts pounced on a deflected shot and guided it past Trautmann.  The two teams traded chances until the final moments.  In the 88th minute the Tars earned a corner.  The initial service was headed out to the top of the box where it was collected by Clarke.  The junior side stepped a defender and moved the ball to his left foot before driving it into the side netting, past a frozen Bulldog keeper.  The Tars saw out the final minutes to hold onto the upset victory.

  • The Tars are now 3-1 all-time when facing off against the Bulldogs.
  • Rollins handed Wingate only their sixth loss dating back to the end of the 2014 season.
  • George New's fourth minute assist was his first point in a Rollins uniform.
  • The game was physical, both teams committed double-digit fouls, Rollins earned three yellow cards, while Wingate saw yellow three times, and red once.
  • Head Coach Keith Buckley improves to 307-148-30, as he is into his 27th season at the helm of the Rollins soccer program.

"This was just a great victory against a very quality program.  We got an excellent team performance, but Damian Clarke was superb."
            -Rollins Head Coach Keith Buckley

"It was a total team effort from everyone on this roster.  We have pushed them hard all preseason and they have responded well; they fully deserve this result.  I believe their concentration level, for all 90 minutes, was the determining factor in the game."
            -Rollins Assistant Coach Tim Bohnenkamp

The Tars will return to Winter Park for a pair of South Region games.  The Tars welcome the West Florida Argonauts in the home opener, scheduled for Friday, September 8, at 7 p.m.  Rollins will then host Spring Hill on Sunday, September 10, at 1 p.m.
