Tars Sink Bucs Behind Crowley's Overtime Winner

Rollins (4-0-1, 2-0-0 SSC) –

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (September 23, 2017) –  It took two overtimes, but the 20th ranked Tars remained unbeaten with a 2-1 win over Sunshine State Conference foe Barry.  James Crowley netted the winner in the 108th minute to give Rollins the victory.  The Tars improve to 4-0-1 on the season and 2-0-0 in SSC play.  The Bucs fall to 0-2-1 on the year, while dropping to 0-0-1 in conference action.

First Half:
 The two teams traded chances in the first 45 minutes of play, with the Tars outshooting the Bucs 5-4.  Each keeper was forced into three saves in the first half.

Second Half: The action intensified as each team upped their offensive pressure in the second half.  The breakthrough came in the 65th minute when Rollins captain Ben Grant converted a penalty kick to give Rollins the lead.  The ball was placed at the spot after a handball in the box by the Bucs.  Barry's equalizer would come right at the death.  The Bucs peppered the Rollins goal, first hitting the crossbar, then blasting a shot that was saved by Julian Grundler, but the senior keeper could not keep out the third attempt, as Barry made the score 1-1 in the 89th minute.

First Overtime: Barry would outshoot the Tars 2-0 in the first ten minute frame.  But Rollins would manage to keep the Bucs off the board.

Second Overtime: The Tars accounted for the only shots in the period, but the winner would have to wait until the 108th minute, just two minutes before the would be final whistle.  James Crowley got on the end of a bouncing ball in the box, knocking it passed Barry keeper Marco Sordi for the sudden victory tally.


  • The Tars are now 21-17-2 all-time when facing off against the Buccaneers.
  • James Crowley's game winner was his first goal of his senior campaign.
  • Ben Grant's fourth goal ties him for second in the SSC.
  • No stranger to close games or late goals, the Tars' four victories have all come by one goal, and Rollins has tallied after the 80th minute in each contest.
  • Head Coach Keith Buckley moves to 310-148-30, as he is into his 27th season at the helm of the Rollins soccer program.

Rollins will remain on the road, as they will face a trip to No. 4 Lynn on Wednesday, September 27.  Kickoff against the reigning SSC Champion Fighting Knights is scheduled for 6 p.m.
