WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 3, 2018) – Rollins got a goal late in the first half, and held third first clean sheet in five matches, on the way to their first Sunshine State Conference victory. The Tars defeated Tampa 2-1 at Barker Family Stadium. Rollins improves to 7-4-0 overall, and 1-4-0 in SSC action. Tampa falls to 1-5-3 overall, and 1-4-0 in conference play.
Rollins goal came courtesy of Logan Laskey. The tally was the junior's first career score in the Blue and Gold. Kevin De Rocha Figueira picked up his first Rollins assist on the play. Eidur Ivarsson made four saves to preserve the shutout. Tampa tallied nine shots as a team, putting four on cage, but could not find the net. The Spartans keeper, Jake Richards held his team in the contest, making seven saves.
Tampa controlled the early possession, but neither team looked too dangerous for the first 40 minutes of the game. In the 41st minute, however, the Tars struck. De Rocha Figueira gathered the ball with his back to goal, turned and riffled a shot at Richards. The keeper could not handle the shot and as he was about to hop on the rebound Laskey was able to poke the ball free and slide it into the open net. The Tars came out aggressive early in the second period, looking to extend their lead, but they were turned back by Richards. Tampa upped their pressure late, searching for an equalizer, but Rollins held strong, capturing the win.
The Tars must now prepare for a road trip to West Palm Beach to take on No. 2 Palm Beach Atlantic. Kickoff against the Sailfish is set for Saturday, October 6, at 7 p.m.
