CLEARWATER, Fla. (February 16, 2020) – Rollins broke three more school records Sunday and finished fifth at the 2020 Sunshine State Conference Championship.
The Tars closed the four-day event with 326.5 points, their most since scoring 395.4 in the inaugural championship (2011) when the SSC had five schools. The fifth place finish is also the team's best since a fifth place finish 2014. Tampa won (952) while Nova Southeastern (809) was second.
For the championship, Rollins broke 11 school records and saw nine swimmers either record or improve on NCAA B cut times.
Dan Sulkowski led the way for the Tars with another record-setting performance. The junior was fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:01.93. He had smashed his own school record by two seconds in the prelims before lowering the time by more than half a second in the finals. Luiggi Reno was 13th in the event with a time of 2:06.52.
Connor Xu took fifth in the 1650-yard freestyle, stopping the clock at 15:42.52, less than a second from breaking the Tars all-time mark.
Elliot Wylie finished 11th in the 200-yard backstroke, posting a time of 1:52.00.
The Tars 400-yard freestyle relay team of Sweeney, Luke Bunnell, Andrew Relihan and Asa Marvel finished the weekend off with a sixth place finish, hitting the wall in 3:04.63, missing the school by .44 seconds.
The Tars on the NCAA performance list will now wait for the NCAA Championship field to be announced Wednesday, February 26. The 2020 NCAA National Championship is slated for March 11-14 a the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
