BRADENTON, Fla. (April 28, 2019) – Fourth seeded, and No. 10, Rollins upset third seeded, and No. 9, Saint Leo to clinch third place in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, in an early morning duel at IMG Academy. Rollins now prepares for the NCAA postseason with a record of 18-6, while the Lions end the conference tournament at 16-9 overall. This is the Tars' best finish in the SSC Championship since defeating Saint Leo in the third-place match at the 2013 event.
The Lions took the first match on the first double court, but Rollins responded, taking the second and third to earn a crucial doubles point. Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz and Atakan Gezer took the third position match by a score of 6-3, leaving the decisive match on the second court. Nicolo De Fraia and Frederick Danielson then sealed the point for Rollins, just moments later with a 6-3 win of their own.
Saint Leo would draw even with the first singles point, but Rollins would tally the second to retake the lead. Freshman Andrea Brignacca used a first set tiebreak to get ahead, before dominating the second set in a 7-6(4), 6-2 win on the sixth court. The Lions would pull even again before the Tars pulled off two straight three set victories to take the match. Gezer recovered from a first set defeat to earn a critical 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win in the fifth spot. Nicolas-Ruiz then won the deciding match, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 on the second court. On the first court No. 13 De Fraia and No. 9 Bruno Faletto were locked in a tight match that went unfinished.
The Tars will await their NCAA Tournament fate. The NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Selection Show is scheduled for Tuesday, May 7 at 8:30 p.m.
