MELBOURNE, Fla. (January 23, 2020) - The Sunshine State Conference released the results from the preseason coach's poll on Thursday afternoon. SSC coaches have selected Rollins to finish fourth in the conference in 2020.
The reigning national champion Barry Buccaneers were picked first, tallying 49 points and seven of the eight first-place votes. Lynn University received the other first-place vote, and slots into the second position with 41 points. Saint Leo was picked third with 38 points, followed by Rollins, Embry-Riddle (26 points), Palm Beach Atlantic (18 points), Florida Southern (17 points), and Eckerd (7 points).
The Sunshine State Conference is routinely one of the toughest to play in at the Division II level. Last year, Barry claimed their fifth SSC tournament title in six years, and were joined at the South Regional by Lynn, Saint Leo and Rollins. Since 2001, there have been six national champions from the conference ... Rollins once, Lynn once, and Barry four times.
The Tars lost five seniors from last year, but bring back a roster of talented veterans and gifted freshmen. Junior Atakan Gezer posted a 19-3 overall record last year, and will be joined near the top of the depth chart by sophomore Andrea Brignacca, who went 15-4. The roster features two seniors, three juniors, two sophomores, and three freshmen. Rollins played in two events during the fall season, with Gezer, Brignacca, and Freddy Danielson all playing well.
Rollins season begins on Tuesday February 4th at Flagler. The first match at home for the Tars will fall on February 11th against Florida National. Conference play begins on February 16th when the Tars host Lynn in Winter Park.
