ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (October 1, 2019) – The Tars sailing team headed west for fourth conference regatta of the fall season last weekend. Head Coach Ben Chaffee again returned to waters he navigated in college and ultimately guided Rollins to a ninth place finish, with a total of 88 points.
The University of South Florida won the event with 23 points, while hosts Eckerd and the University of South Florida took the remaining podium positions.
The day started with a steady north-east breeze, however, the wind shifted throughout the day, becoming light, inconsistent and unpredictable, and testing the 15 team field.
Rollins was represented by Nick Baker, Ruth Reischmann, Jason Goldsmith, Nate Barrett, Simon Munoz, and Wyatt Sandefur. The Tars improved greatly throughout the day, and the event was highlighted by a third place finish in the fourth A Division race of the day.
With the weather conditions, the regatta cut short and completed only five races cutting short the Tars' hoped for climb. Rollins finished the day in 9th place, and one slot out from a trip to the conference championship.
Looking ahead, the team continues to work hard and is preparing to host its fall regatta October 5 on the friendly confines of Lake Virginia. Eight SAISA rivals including NC State, Georgia Tech and UCF are slated to compete as Rollins will roll out the traditional BBQ and a new award for the winner of the event - the Golden Bailer.
