MIAMI, Fla. (March 2, 2020) – The Tars braved changing winds, and cool temperatures on the water, during the second points race of the spring season. Ultimately the Tars grew into the competition and finished a strong second place.
Teagan Walsh and Sutton Macinnes sailed out in A division while Carly Orhan and Tiffany Smeal excelled in the B Division. The day started off rough with Rollins sailors getting used to the conditions. After the first four races each team had gotten into a groove. The Tars A team tabbed a second-place finish in the second race, before ending the day with a second, a fourth, and a first-place finish in the final races. With four races left the Tars' B team catapulted up the leader board with a second-place finish, and three consecutive wins. These results propelled the Tars out of 4th place, where Rollins had been sitting most of the day, and into second.
Since 2009 when Techscore began keeping score for college sailing, Rollins has sailed in 73 points regattas. This weekend was one of Rollins Sailing's four best finishes in points competition.
Boathouse director Dave Herbster said Rollins accomplished their, "best finish in points competition since March 5, 2012." While head sailing coach Ben Chafee added, "With one more race each I believe we would have been able to win, but that's how sailing goes."
The Tars will take to the water again next weekend, on Saturday, March 7, when they head to Jacksonville, Florida for the South Points 3 regatta.
