SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (November 8, 2019) – Jaylyn Harrison poured in a career-high 21 points and led Rollins to a 70-56 win over the University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras in San Juan Friday night.
The pesky Jerezanas kept it close as the Tars (1-0) held just a seven point lead at the half before eventually pulling away.
Harrison shot 7-of-10 from the field and hit five 3-pointers to go along with nine rebounds. Fellow senior and Colonial High School product Denise Daniels added 11 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Asia Newsome netted eight.
Maldonado paced PR Rio Piedras with 16 points and six rebounds.
Both teams shot 36 percent from the field with the Tars grabbing a 59-35 edge on the glass, including 23-3 on the offensive end.
Rollins kept UPRP off the board for the first four minutes and jumped out to a 19-11 lead after the first. After going up by as many as 14 midway through the second, Rollins saw the Jerezanas heat up and cut the Tars advantage to 34-26 at the break.
Coming out of the locker room, the Tars defense dug in and Harrison caught fire from deep with Rollins racing to a 41-26 advantage. Rio Piedras again chopped away and the Tars lead stood at 55-41 heading into the fourth.
That would be as close as Rollins would allow the game to get as both teams scored 15 points in the fourth and the Tars came out with a 14-point, season opening win.
Rollins will match-up with Puerto Rico Bayamon on Saturday, November 9 with tip off scheduled for 2 p.m. (ET) from The College of San Juan. Fans can listen to the action live on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com.
