WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 22, 2019) – Rollins held New York Tech without a field goal for the final 6:47 and picked up a 63-45 win Friday night at Warden Arena.
The victory is a third-straight for the Tars (5-1) and drops the East Coast Conference preseason favorite Bears to 3-3.
Asia Newsome netted a career-high 13 points to lead the way for Rollins. The sophomore shot 6-of-8 from the field and pulled down four rebounds. Yari Martinez-Toro added 12 points while Denise Daniels led the team with 10 rebounds.
Shalie Frierson scored 12 for NYIT with Meg Knollmeyer netted 11 and snaring seven boards.
Rollins trailed 13-11 after the first quarter, but bounced back to take a 29-25 lead into the break.
Martinez-Toro drained a deep 3-pointer early in the second to put the Tars up by 14 before a NYIT steal and breakaway layup cut the Rollins lead to 54-42 with 6:47 to play. That would be the last Bears score from the field, however, as Rollins held the visitors 0-for-7 the rest of the way and led by as many as 19 in the final seconds.
Rollins shot 41 percent in the game and held NYIT to just 24 percent. The Tars outrebounded the Bears 44-31.
Rollins is back in action on Sunday, November 24 hosting Puerto Rico Mayaguez at noon. NYIT will first meet the Janes on Saturday, November 23 at noon in Warden Arena. Fans can follow the Tars all season long on at RollinsSportsLive.com and locally on 91.5 FM WPRK.
