Tars Open SSC Tourney Tied for Seventh

DADE CITY, Fla. (April 14, 2019) – The steady play of Seher Atwal and an ace by Lara van Staden highlighted first day action of the Sunshine State Conference Championship for Rollins women's golf.


The 16th-ranked Tars opened with a 22-over par score of 310, matching 11th-ranked Florida Southern in a tie for seventh.

Fourth-ranked Nova Southeastern leads the way with a seven-over 295 while eighth-ranked Lynn is seconds with a 10-over 298. Top-ranked Barry and 13th-ranked Saint Leo both shot 299 and are tied for third.

Atwal posted a three-over 75 to open and is tied for eighth. The junior hit the turn at two over and was four-over after 14 holes, but got a stroke back with a birdie on No. 17.

Van Staden is tied for 13th with a four-over 76. She was two-over until recording a hole-in-one on the par-three, 151 yard seventh. The sophomore quickly followed that with a birdie on No. 8 and was one-under at the turn. Van Staden was five-over for the back-nine, but did have a birdie on the par-three 14th.

Jennifer Jung recovered from a tough start and is 34th with a seven-over round of 79. The freshman was five-over after three holes before getting a stroke back with a birdie on No. 5. She recorded 10 pars and three bogeys the rest of the way.

Sophie Faulkner is a stroke back of Jung, tied for 35th with an eight-over 80. Selin Timur posted an 82 and is tied for 40th

Kiira Riihijarvi of Tampa, the top-ranked player in the nation, leads the field after a three-under 69. Barry's Lauren Grinberg is second with a two-under 70.

The Tars will be the first golfers off the tee for round two on Monday, April 15,  starting at 8:30 a.m. Fans can follow the action at
