Thompson Leads Tars on SSC Championship First Day

CLEARWATER, Fla. (February 13, 2020) – Maya Thompson had a hand in two school records Thursday and led Rollins into third place at the start of the Sunshine State Conference Championship.

The Tars totaled 38.5 points on the day to lead fourth-place Lynn by 3.5 and fifth-place Saint Leo by four in a tightly contested middle of the pack. Nova Southeastern tops the field with 172.5 points while Tampa is second (138.5).

Thompson set a new school record in the 50-yard freestyle, posting a NCAA B cut time of 20.90 and taking 11th place. She had shared the school-best time of 20.93 with Audrey Kula for the last two seasons before finally making it her own on Thursday.  

Anna Van Zyverden tied for 15th in the event with a time of 24.05.

Thompson teamed with Sam Shelly, Beatriz Olivieri and Darrell Pawley to finish fourth in the 200-yard medley relay, hitting the wall in 1:46.63. Their time was a half second better than the previous school record set two seasons ago.

Sydney Willis earned a seventh place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle, stopping the clock in a NCAA B cut time of 10:21.55. Jill Hughes also hit the B standard and was eighth in 10:21.65. Abby Frey scored a 12th place finish (10:29.12) and Erika Wesch was 14th (10:31.84).
