No. 4 Ferris State and (RV) Drury Too Much for Tars in Tampa
Tampa, Fla. (September 1, 2018) – After a thrilling four-set victory on their home court Friday night, the Rollins Volleyball team took to I-4 to make the short trek to the University of Tampa for a two-match slate at the Courtyard Marriott Classic. The Tars squared up against their second top-five team this season, as well as their second team to receive votes on the AVCA DII Poll, falling in both matches to close out their weekend schedule.
Rollins opened up the day facing fourth-ranked Ferris State, falling to the Bulldogs by a final score of 3-0 (25-27, 15-25, 20-25). The Tars then squared up against Drury University, who received votes on the first AVCA Division II Coaches Poll of the season, taking the opening set but finding themselves bested in the final three to drop the match by a score of 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 14-25, 11-25).
GAME ONE: Rollins vs. No. 4 Ferris State
Senior Rachel Fletcher led the Tars in the opening match earning eight kills while sophomore Leslie Seda earned seven and freshman Candace Doxey tallied six while hitting .385 on the morning. Freshman Rebecca Kuehn earned 17 assists, while Sarah Konemann dished out eight of her own. Fletcher earned a team best three aces, which was matched by the Bulldogs' Mekayla Carey marking a match high. Seda led the team in digs with 11, while Jessika Linnemeyer and Kuehn totaled eight apiece. The Tars put up two blocks, as Kerra Tirado and Fletcher each earned a block assist.
Ferris State saw two players tally 12 kills apiece in Allyson Cappel and Carey to lead the squad. Maeve Grimes dished out a match best 31 assists, while Katie Placek led the team with 11 digs. The Bulldogs notched four blocks as a team, with Audrey Bellina and Carey getting credit for two block assists each.
GAME TWO: Rollins vs. (RV) Drury
Playing in their third match in two days, Rollins played their full roster throughout the match-up against Drury. Seniors Fletcher and Sam Schlesman led the team with nine and eight kills respectively, while freshman Doxey followed with five of her own. Kuehn earned a team best 15 assists, while Konemann totaled 10 against the Panthers. Linnemeyer was hot on the serve, earning a team best three aces while Seda and Fletcher tallied two apiece. On defense, Fletcher led the team with 15 digs, while Linnemeyer notched 12 and Seda totaled 11 on the afternoon. Schlesman led the team with four blocks, while Seda put up two, and Adriane Griffith and Haley Driscoll earned one apiece.
The Panthers saw four players earn double-digit kill counts, led by Bentley Mara with 17, while Landyn Kozlowski and Taylor Forth tallied 11 each and Emmalee Chrest earned 10 of her own. Kendra Sater dished out a match high 43 assists and added a team best 19 digs for a double-double. Matching Sater in digs was Bree Schmidt with 19 of her own. Sater also led the team in aces with three of the Panthers' four on the day. At the net, both Forth and Chrest put up two blocks apiece.
- TAKING ON THE TOP TEAMS: Rollins has squared up against seven opponents so far this season. Two of those opponents have been ranked in the top-five on the AVCA DII Poll, as they faced then No. 1 and defending National Champion Concordia-St. Paul, as well as No. 4 Ferris State this morning. Two other opponents were receiving votes on the poll at the time of competition as they took on Wayne State in their opening weekend, as well as Drury this afternoon.
