WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 3, 2019) - The Eckerd Tritons were relentless on their attack, and came out on top over the Rollins Tars 3-1 on Thursday evening at the Alfond Sports Center.
The Tars, playing in only their second home game of the season, came out hot in set one. As a team they posted 14 kills with only one attack error at a .406 percentage, their best in a set this season. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as Eckerd posted a whopping 17 kills to take the set 25-22. Abby Harbinson had a solid effort, posting four kills in five chances, and adding two block assists.
Things took a turn for the worse in set two as Eckerd posted 12 kills at .450, and an impressive 82% sideout percentage. The Tars frontline of defense, which has been a strength of the team as of late, only managed a single block during the set. Eight attack errors did not help, and Rollins fell by a score of 25-16.
Set three was a whole new story for Rollins. Rather than lay down and end the night, they fought hard and stayed in the match. The turning point came with Eckerd leading 17-11. After Harper Smith scored on an assist from Rachel Reeve, the Tars were able to rip off six more points in a row behind the service of Alondra Rodriguez to take an 18-17 lead. After a bit of back and forth, the Tars received a kill from Riley Spurlin, a huge block from the duo of Alexis Yeager and Candace Doxey, and then a monster smash from Harper Smith to wrap things up, 25-23.
The momentum did not carry over to set four, however. The Tritons controlled this set form the jump, jumping out to a 3-0 lead and extending that lead as high as 17-6. The Tars once again showed fight, Pulling within seven at 20-13, but in the end the Tritons were too much. As a team eckerd hit.336 on their attacks compared to .239 for the Tars. Eckerd moves to 11-3 on the year, while Rollins now stands at 4-9.
Harper Smith posted a team-high 15 kills for Rollins, to go along with a service acem four digs and a block assist. Freshman Riley Spurlin had one of her best games of the year, collecting ten kills, two digs and two blocks. Rachel Reeve piloted the offense with 35 assists.
