Tritons Top Tars

WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 3, 2019) - The Eckerd Tritons were relentless on their attack, and came out on top over the Rollins Tars 3-1 on Thursday evening at the Alfond Sports Center.

The Tars, playing in only their second home game of the season, came out hot in set one. As a team they posted 14 kills with only one attack error at a .406 percentage, their best in a set this season. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as Eckerd posted a whopping 17 kills to take the set 25-22. Abby Harbinson had a solid effort, posting four kills in five chances, and adding two block assists.

Things took a turn for the worse in set two as Eckerd posted 12 kills at .450, and an impressive 82% sideout percentage. The Tars frontline of defense, which has been a strength of the team as of late, only managed a single block during the set. Eight attack errors did not help, and Rollins fell by a score of 25-16.

Set three was a whole new story for Rollins. Rather than lay down and end the night, they fought hard and stayed in the match. The turning point came with Eckerd leading 17-11. After Harper Smith scored on an assist from Rachel Reeve, the Tars were able to rip off six more points in a row behind the service of Alondra Rodriguez to take an 18-17 lead.  After a bit of back and forth, the Tars received a kill from Riley Spurlin, a huge block from the duo of Alexis Yeager and Candace Doxey, and then a monster smash from Harper Smith to wrap things up, 25-23.

The momentum did not carry over to set four, however. The Tritons controlled this set form the jump, jumping out to a 3-0 lead and extending that lead as high as 17-6. The Tars once again showed fight, Pulling within seven at 20-13, but in the end the Tritons were too much. As a team eckerd hit.336 on their attacks compared to .239 for the Tars. Eckerd moves to 11-3 on the year, while Rollins now stands at 4-9.

Harper Smith posted a team-high 15 kills for Rollins, to go along with a service acem four digs and a block assist. Freshman Riley Spurlin had one of her best games of the year, collecting ten kills, two digs and two blocks. Rachel Reeve piloted the offense with 35 assists.

The Tars are back in action this Saturday, October 5th as they host Florida Southern. Game time is set for 4 pm. Fans who can;t make it out to the game can watch the action live at RollinsSports.com.
