WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 5, 2019) - Rollins suffered another tough loss on Saturday afternoon, falling at home to the Florida Southern Mocs 3-1.
The Tars had great energy from the jump, securing a set one victory with a season-best 18 kills in the first set. It was a true team effort as Marlee Johnson, Erin Burke, Riley Spurlin, Rachel Reeve and Candace Doxey all recorded multiple kills. Johnson was especially impressive, as she also posted an assist, six digs and a block assist during the set. Even with the agressive atack, Florida Southern stayed in the match, forcing extra points. Johnson and Doxey were able to secure the final two kills to help Rollins to a 26-24 win.
Set two was another close one as both teams once again required extra points. It was the opposite of the first set however, as Florida Southern was able to post a 26-24 win. Attack errors plagued the Tars in this one as they only hit .108 as a team on 37 attempts. Doxey was once again a standout, recording three blocks in the set. Erin Burke and Abby Harbinson each added three kills and two block assists as well.
Rollins was able to hang around in set three, but did not have enough to take the set as they fell 25-21. Similar to the second set of the day, Rollins once again struggled on the attack with eight errors and a team hit percentage of .114. It was a similar story in set four as well. The Tars seemed to run out of gas in the final set, and lost 25-13.
Without top attacker Harper Smith, and lead blocker Alexis Yeager, the Tars received plenty of positive contributions. Marlee Johnson, who entered the contest with six kills on the year, finished her day with nine kills, two assists, and 19 digs. Candace Doxey led the team in kills with eleven, and also added four blocks on the defensive end. And Rachel Reeve chipped in with a season-high eight kills to go along with 34 assists.
With the loss, Rollins falls to 4-10 on the season. They are back in action next weekend when they hit the road to face Palm Beach Atlantic on October 11 and Barry on October 12.
