HOOVER, Ala. (October 18, 2019) - Rollins volleyball suffered a heartbreaking loss against Christian Brothers University on Friday afternoon, falling in five sets (25-23, 25-23, 11-25, 20-25, 15-10).
In the first game of the GSC/SSC Crossover, the Tars started strong with a 25-23 win in the first set. Candace Doxey led the offensive attack with five kills and a pair of blocks, while setter Rachel Reeve paced the offense with a dozen assists. It was a tight match, with the score knotted at 17 all at one point. However, the Tars were able to go on a five point run thanks to a pair of successful attacks from Doxey and Erin Burke, followe dby back to back blocks from Doxey and Alexis Yeager to push the game to 22-17. The Tars were able to ahng on for the two-point win. Rollins hit at a .264 percentage while holding the Lady Bucs to a .094 mark.
Rollins was able to take advantage of numerous errors by Christian Brothers in the second set to secure another 25-23 win. The Lady Bucs only managed a .029 attack percentage that included nine attack errors. In addition, they also had three service errors and a bad set. Rollins took advantage of the miscues, and added eleven kills to secure the win. Burke and Doxey each had three kills to lead the Tars offense.
Set three is where the tables began to turn. Rollins came out flat after the extended break, managing only 11 points in the entire set. It was the opposite for Christian Brothers who totaled 11 kills on .429 to keep themselves in the game. Rollins did not help themselves after turning in three service errors, two bad sets and allowing five service aces for the Lady Bucs.
The fourth set of the match was a true heartbreaker. The two teams were in midst of an exciting battle with the score tied as late as 19-19. The Tars tried to be a little too agressive to close things out and committed five attack errors in the final six points to give Christian Brothers the win, 25-20. Riley Spurlin did her best to keep Rollins in the match, posting seven kills in set four. In all, Rollins committed ten attack errors i the set and had an attack percentage of .070.
Christian Brothers played well in the final frame, and did not allow the Tars to make a run. Rollins was only able to muster 16 attack attempts (of which they converted five), but just could not get on the board enough to take the match.
Spurlin finished with a solid line of 14 kills on .222 with eight digs. Doxey and Burke each checked in with ten kills of their own. On defense, the Tars totaled 17 blocks on the day with Doxey, Yeager, and Abby Harbinson collecting four each.
The Tars now sit at 4-13 on the season. They have a pair of games lined up for Saturday. Up first is Shorter University, whom Rollins defeated in the first match of the season. The two teams will play at 9:00 am. After a short break, the Tars will hit the court once again to take on the West Alabama Tigers at 4:45 pm in their final match of the Crossover event.
