TAMPA, Fla. (October 24, 2019) - The reigning national champion Tampa Spartans defeated the Rollins Tars in three sets on Thursday evening, winning 25-15, 25-20, 25-17.
Set one was tight for the first few points, but a seven-point run by Tampa gave them a lead they would not relinquish. With the score 6-5 in favor of the Spartans, a multitude of mishaps proved costly for the Tars. During the Tampa point streak, there was a service error, bad set, two Tampa service aces and an attack error. Rollins was never able to recover, and fell in set one by a score of 25-15.
The second set was much more competitive as the Tars were able to convert ten kills, their highest of the three sets. The only problem was that Tampa was locked in, able to post 19 kills against only two attack errors. It was a two-point games as late as 21-19, but a flurry of successful kills at the end of the set gave Tampa the 25-20 win.
Set three began with sloppy play on both sides as the first five total points were all scored on errors. Once both teams were able to get things going, it stayed close through the first half of the set. However, at 19-16 Tampa, the Spartans were able to go on another point run, ripping off five in a row this time to put the game out of reach. They would eventually take the set 25-17.
The Tars found success last weekend after switching to a 6-2 rotation, which led to a pair of victories. They stuck with it in tonight's game, but were not able to find the same success. They finished the night with 27 kills on a .103 percentage, while Tampa totaled 42 kills at .314. Riley Spurlin led the way with eight kills, and Abby Harbinson chipped in six of her own (with no errors). Rachel Reeve has the most assists with 11, while Charlie Durbin had the most digs at 15.
Rollins is back in action on Saturday afternoon when they take take on the Saint Leo Lions on the road. Game time is set for 4 p.m. As always, stay up to date with all the latest Tars news, schedules and information at RollinsSports.com.
