MELBOURNE, Fla. (November 4, 2019) - A pair of Rollins freshmen have taken home two of the three Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week awards for games played October 28-November 3rd. Alexis Yeager earned her second defensive award, while Riley Spurlin earns her first career honor.
The Tars had a full slate last week, playing three conference games at home. On Tuesday, Rollins was able to defeat Florida Tech in three sets. Yeager recorded a dig and a solo block, while Spurlin tallied a team-high 13 kills at .250% to lead Rollins. On Thursday, Rollins fell to conference leader Lynn in four sets, but played tough throughout. Spurlin added a dozen more kills to her ledger in this one, while Yeager picked up five block assists in the match. In the final match of the week, both girls had their best games of the season. It took five sets to defeat Nova Southeastern, and in those five sets, Spurlin was responsible for a whopping 22 kills at a .321 percentage while also adding seven blocks for good measure. Yeager put on a show at the front of the net defensively. The Ft. Myers, Fla. native had three solo blocks and ten block assists (as well as two digs and five kills) to help the Tars secure their eighth win of the season.
Spurlin is now up to 244 kills on the year, 11th most in the SSC. She also checks in at twelfth in conference with 2.87 kill sper set. She leads Rollins in kills, and has recorded at least 12 kills in eight of her last nine matches.
Yeager is sixth in the conference with 80 total blocks on the year, ten solo and 70 assists. Her rate of 1.14 per set is the third highest mark in the SSC. She is the Rollins team leader in blocks, and there has only been one game this season where she did not record a block.
