Tars Topped by Tritons

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (November 9, 2019) - Rollins took the Eckerd Tritons to the brink on Saturday, but could not finish as they fell in five sets.

The Tars, playing their sixth game in twelve days, put up a fight in the first set. The Rollins attack looked sharp, posting 15 kills at a .314 percentage. With the Tritons leading 10-8, Rollins was able to go on an eight-point run behind the service of Abby Harbinson, who had back-to-back service aces during the rally. Eckerd was able to battle back to tie it at 24-24, but Riley Spurlin and Alexis Yeager score don back-to-back kills to clinch the set.

Set two was a back and forth battle, with neither side holding a lead of more than three points until the very end. Rollins landed ten kills with only three errors, but most of their attacks were kept in play by a solid Eckerd defense. The Tritons, who lead the Sunshine State Conference in service aces, landed four of them against Rollins in the set. Eckerd would go on to win, 25-21.

Rollins was back on track in the third set. The Tars scored the first five points of the match behind a pair of Riley Spurlin kills and a couple attack errors from the Tritons. The lead extended to 11-2 in favor of the Tars after another run that was sparked by three kills from Harper Smith. Things got real interesting with Rollins up 19-12. Eckerd went on an eight-point run after Rollins committed five attack errors to make it 20-19 Eckerd. The Tritons returned the free points however, committing four errors of their own in the final five points to help Rollins secure a 25-22 win.

The fourth set was all Tritons as they jumped out to a 14-4 lead and didn't look back. Rollins tallied twelve kills at a .167 percentage, their lowest of the night. They forced eight errors from Eckerd, but could not capitalize on the mistakes, as they fell 25-21.

This was the third time in four games that the Tars took a match to five sets. Both teams were on point with their attacks in the final frame, with Rollins posting seven kills and no attack errors against Eckerd's eleven kills and one error. The turning point was once again service aces. The Tritons added three more to their ledger in the fifth set, giving them 13 for the game and a 15-9 victory.

Riley Spurlin had one of her best games of the season, totaling 19 kills with one error for a .450 attack percentage. Harper Smith had a nice all-around game as well with 15 kills, eight digs and three blocks. Alexis Yeager continued to be a force at the net, picking up five more blocks for her seasson total which now sits at 96.

With the loss, the Tars fall to 8-19 on the season. Their are four games remaining on the slate, all of which will be played at home for Rollins. Their next match is against Barry on Thursday, November 14 at 7 pm. Be sure to stay up to date on the latest Tars news and information at
