Set Up

Rollins suffered a pair of losses last week, falling to Barry in three sets and dropping a heartbreaker to Palm Beach Atlantic in five sets. With the Tars sitting in ninth place in the conference, this will be the last week of the season. Rollins will look to end their season on a high note with a pair of home wins.

Team Previews

Rollins (8-21, 3-15 SSC): The win/loss record for the Tars certainly does not tell the whole story of their 2019 campaign. The team that has taken the floor each of the past three weeks has shown significant improvement from earlier this season. Four freshmen have been the spark for the Tars: Riley Spurlin, Alexis Yeager, Abby Harbinson, and Charlie Durbin. Spurlin, Yeager and Durbin are the team leaders in kills, blocks, and digs, respectively. Last week, Yeager became the first Tar with a 100-block season since 2016. Other targets within reach this week:

  • Erin Burke is 14 kills shy of 200
  • Rachel Reeve is 29 assists shy of 800 and 26 digs shy of 200
  • Spurling needs 23 kills for 350 on the year

Saint Leo (20-10, 11-8 SSC): The Lions have an outside shot of making an NCAA regional, so they will be playing hard against the Tars on Thursday. Saint Leo has won two in a row, including an upset of Embry-Riddle on their senior day last weekend. The Lions have the most kills in the SSC (1,543) and the second highest attack percentage (.250). A whopping six players have at least 180 kills on the year, led by Ashley Quero's 283. They are vulnerable up front though, having allowed the most opponent kills (1,390) in the conference.

Tampa (22-8, 15-4 SSC): The Spartans sit in second place in the SSC, and need a win against Rollins plus two losses by Lynn to claim the SSC title. They are second in total kills (1,525) and third in the conference in attack percentage (.247). Katie McKeil is the main cog in the machine, as she is up to 424 kills on the year, nearly 50 more than any other player. The biggest weakness for Tampa is at the net on defense, where they are near the bottom of the conference in blocks (1.58 per set).

Robinson's Ramblings

"At the beginning of the season, this team set their sights on working hard to improve every day we stepped on the court in practice or in a game. With very few exceptions, they really have accomplished that goal. Considering how many close losses that we have had, it would be easy for them to have given up or have bad attitudes, but they continue to be a joy to coach. Moments like the 5th set win against West Alabama on the road or the 5th set win against a hot Nova team here at home have really reinforced just how hard they have worked this season. There is no doubt that we are looking to finish strong this weekend, and we really could not be more excited about the future of the program with so many young players getting such quality experience against veteran teams this year."

Notes

  • Head coach Mika Robinson is in her fourth season at the helm for the Tars, and 12th overall as a head coach. Her career record sits at 202-172.
  • This will be the 77th matchup between Rollins and Saint Leo. Rollins leads the all-time series 50-26.
  • This will be the 87th matchup between Rollins and Tampa.
