WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 21, 2019) - After a strong start to the evening, the Rollins attack faltered as the Tars fell to the Saint Leo Lions in four sets on Tuesday.
It was a game of runs in the first set as Rollins went up 3-0, followed by seven in a row for Saint Leo, and then four in a row for Rollins to tie it up at seven. After some back-and-forth action, the Tars were able to jump to a 21-16 advantage. The Lions made a run thanks to six Rollins attack errors late in the set, giving Saint Leo a 23-22 lead. An attack error and a kill by Riley Spurlin put the Tars one point away from winning, but Saint Leo took the next three to secure the 26-24 win.
After the ugly first set, Rollins was able to find their groove, and took the second set by a score of 25-20. After hitting at a .025 percentage in the first set, the Tars turned in 10 attacks at a .250 clip while holding the Lions to a .094 mark. Candace Doxey played well, recording four kills in set two along with two digs and a block. Rollins also tallied three service aces in the set, with two coming from Rachel Reeve.
Set three saw Rollins jump to a 9-5 lead, helped by a pair of kills from Abby Harbinson. Saint Leo switched things up with a substitution, and went on to score the next six in a row to put themselves back in the game. A few rallies later, the score was 13-12 in favor of Saint Leo. From there, it was all Lions as they scored twelve of the next thirteen points to take the set 25-13.
It was more of the same in the fourth set, as Rollins couldn not find an answer for the dangerous Lion attack. Saint Leo, the highest scoring team in the Sunshine State Conference, posted 17 kills in set number four at a .394 percentage to secure the 25-14 win to claim the match.
Spurlin finished as the top scorer for the Tars with 13 kills to go with four blocks. Doxey was next in line with nine kills and three blocks of her own. As a team, the Tars only managed 40 kills at a .115 attack percentage.
The final game of the season will be held at the Alfond Sports Center in Winter Park on Saturday. The Tars will host the Tampa Spartans with first serve scheduled for 4 p.m. Fans who cannot attend in person can catch the action live on the Tars Sports Network.
